Lincolnshire Waterways for the Future

The Planning Company has undertaken a refresh of the Lincolnshire Waterways Development Framework, entitled Lincolnshire Waterways for the Future. This is a strategic document based on sustainability principles that will be used to guide the regeneration of the county’s waterways and their promotion for sustainable tourism purposes. It is thought to be the only waterways strategy covering a whole county.

The Framework is diverse including topics such as waterways restoration, biodiversity, waterside tourism development and outdoor recreation. The work undertaken recently was to review and update the previous report from 2002 that was produced by Colin Blundel, the Director, in his time at British Waterways. Since that report was prepared around £16m has been spent on implementation of projects and the Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership has developed a good reputation for project delivery and has been very successful in its applications for external funds. The Development Framework was used successfully as part of the bidding process for regional and European funds.

The consultation process for the refresh involved a round of meetings with relevant public and voluntary sector organisations within the county. A detailed review was undertaken of the wide range of current policy documents that impact on the management of the county’s waterways.

All the information was compiled into a report with a Vision, 12 aims, 8 key themes and 120 objectives. The format has been designed so that each objective can be developed into a specific project and the necessary partnerships and funding mechanisms can be set up. The draft report was put out to consultation to interested parties for 6 weeks and the comments received incorporated into the final report.
