Woolhope Dome, Herefordshire

Rural Case Studies

The Planning Company worked with Jim Langridge Countryside Consulting to develop a series of case studies to demonstrate the environmental economy model that has been developed for the West Midlands.

The model is based on sustainability principles and aims to encourage the development of new local businesses that are dependent of a high quality local environment and where the business in turn contributes to the management of that environment

This involved working with a steering group with representatives of statutory agencies to identify suitable examples where there are clear links between the local economy and high quality environments. A short list was developed and these cases were investigated in more detail and written up. The case studies included the Forestry Commission site at Birches Valley on Cannock Chase, Staffordshire; the Woolhope Dome Project in Herefordshire; and the Heartwoods Project, based in Shropshire and covering the whole of the West Midlands.

Materials were prepared in the form of text for a leaflet and a Powerpoint presentation for use by a wide range of bodies in promoting the environmental economy concept.

It is intended that the promotional materials will be used to promote projects that can apply to the new Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) for funding.
