Environment Agency Volunteering Study

In 2009, The Planning Company assisted Jim Langridge Countryside Consulting www.countrysideconsulting.co.uk in undertaking research into the value of involving volunteers in the work of the Environment Agency in the Anglian Region. The Agency are keen to involve volunteers more and wanted to find out the best ways of taking this forward, building on experience from elsewhere.

The study involved a series of consultation meetings with Environment Agency staff, covering a range of Agency functions, and key external partners with a particular interest or experience in this area of work. The area covered stretched from the River Ancholme in Lincolnshire to the River Stour in Suffolk.

A report was prepared outlining the benefits of volunteering to both the Agency and the volunteers and setting out a number of options for approaches that could be taken. One of the key proposals was to develop demonstration projects to involve local community groups taking responsibility for work in their local area. The report was supported by a series of cases studies on the work being undertaken to date.

It is intended that the report will be circulated internally with the Agency and used to develop national policy in this area. The Corporate Plan now includes a strong reference to working with local communities.
